Prior to the attainment of Associated Statehood in 1969 the audit of the accounts of the then colony was carried out by the Overseas Audit Service, there was a Director of Audit for the Overseas Audit Service, and the local office was headed by a Senior Auditor.
With the attainment of Associated Statehood on 27th October 1969, the Constitution established the Office of Director of Audit for the state of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The first Director of Audit of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was the late Mr. Hugh H. Hamlett MBE, who, prior to his appointment, served as Senior Auditor and also acted as Director of Audit of the Windward Islands.
